During our preschool ballet class we board the magic train and journey to a faraway land. One of my little dancers sat at the side, when her mum asked her why she wasn’t joining in, she replied ‘I am waiting for the train’ it’s moments like this that remind me now imaginative and creative young children can be and the importance of improvisation within a dance class.
Improvisation and free movement can often be perceived as children running around, not really learning anything; however they are a vital part of any dance class. Improvisation is a valuable tool in accessing if a child has understood what has been learnt in class and can transfer those skills into free movement. Giving young children the opportunity to explore their movement capabilities develops their ability to take risks and push boundaries when moving. Delving into improvisation and free movement, allows young children to express themselves freely, opening and spontaneously, building confidence not only within dance but all aspects of life.
